AI and how it misleads people in the handmade sector
We’ve all done it - looked at a video on social media and thought WOW and we’ve also seen those funny videos that you just know are totally AI generated but sometimes if you don’t know the handmade process behind a piece you might think it’s for real
This came up in Bloom recently when a lady asked me about a resin floor she wanted done. Now I don’t do floors but asked a few questions hoping to be able to steer her to someone who did. “I have a video of what I want” she said. When I looked at it, it was clear to me that it wasn’t real and the lady couldn’t understand why. So I pointed out a few bits and pieces that were super obvious to me but then realised not obvious to someone who knows nothing about resin.
So here’s a few pointers
Videos are always shown as time lapse or speeded up in someways
Resin just thrown down on the floor or on an object, no matter how deep the resin is poured. It doesn’t work that way. You’d see the sand move, more than one layer required in real life.
More than one pair of hands working in close ups.
In Beach scenes everything is flat and in one layer. To do a proper beach piece the beach is one layer and each of the crashing waves are a layer in themselves.
Standing pouring resin on a floor all the way around them. How did the get out, fly?
You never see them mixing the resin in small batches, only massive vats, enough to resin a small country
I hope this goes a little way to help decide fact from fiction. There are loads of real amazing resin artists out there but some of these AI generated videos create unrealistic expectations for clients from Artists
