The Hidden Cost Of Cheap

Every year thousands of mass produced acacia and bamboo cheese boards are imported into Ireland. They are chemically treated, bonded with toxic glues and designed to warp, crack and end up in landfill and I’m doing my best to stop this cycle!

Hi carbon mileage Importing mass produced boards from across the globe generates transport emissions. I recently saw a collab between an Irish Designer and a retail giant plugging a new homewares range and guess what? Instead of using beautiful Irish wood they used imported acacia. Profit over quality at its finest!!

Chemical integrity issues Off the shelf brands often use factory grade chemical finishes, industrial stabilisers or cellulose coatings that strip the wood’s natural breathability.

Built in obsolescence Thin chemically glued composites easily break down under real kitchen usage, encouraging a disposable culture.

The Solution Sustainably sourced Irish hardwoods. I make all my boards with native timbers like Irish beech, ash, walnut and elm.

Heirloom quality and durability Every board is cut to a minimum thickness of 1” for structural integrity and treated only with natural food grade oils. They are dual purpose- stunning glossy Ocean inspired resin art on one side and durable knife safe chopping surface on the back.

A strict zero waste model My studio works on a circular blue print. I never throw away timber scraps. Every off cut from a chopping board is reimagined into functional products such as tea light holder and off cuts of resin are used to create eye catching and different jewellery
